Sonitpur Elephant Reserve
Sonitpur Elephant Reserve is one of the most important elephant conservation landscapes in Northeast India. Situated in northern Assam along the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, the reserve protects vital elephant habitat adjoining the Kameng Elephant Reserve. It forms part of the larger Eastern Himalayan elephant landscape and supports one of India’s largest free-ranging elephant populations while also conserving tigers, leopards, gaur and exceptional bird diversity.
Location
The reserve is situated in Sonitpur and Darrang districts of Assam along the Himalayan foothills. It shares its northern boundary with the Kameng Elephant Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh, creating an uninterrupted transboundary elephant habitat.
