Ratapani Tiger Reserve
Introduction
Ratapani Tiger Reserve, located in central Madhya Pradesh, was notified as India’s 57th Tiger Reserve in 2024. Centred on the former Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary, the reserve protects an extensive tract of forests in the Vindhyan landscape between Bhopal and Narmadapuram. It strengthens habitat connectivity for tigers and other wildlife in central India.

Location
The reserve extends across Raisen and Sehore districts, southeast of Bhopal, in the Vindhyan hill ranges.
History
Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary received in-principle approval for many years before being officially notified as India’s 57th Tiger Reserve in 2024, expanding the Project Tiger network in Madhya Pradesh.
Landscape, Geography & Habitat
The reserve covers about 1,271.47 sq km, including a core area of 763.80 sq km and a buffer area of 507.67 sq km. The landscape consists of rugged hills, plateaus, teak and mixed deciduous forests, bamboo patches, grasslands and seasonal streams.
Flora
The forests are dominated by teak, saja, bija, tendu, mahua, bamboo, arjun, jamun, khair and a rich diversity of shrubs, grasses and medicinal plants.
Fauna
Important wildlife includes Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Dhole, Indian Wolf in surrounding landscapes, Gaur, Sambar, Chital, Nilgai, Chousingha, Wild Boar, Giant Squirrel and over 250 bird species.
Rivers & Water Bodies
The reserve is drained by tributaries of the Narmada, including the Barna River, along with numerous seasonal streams and waterholes.
Other Attractions
Rock shelters with prehistoric paintings, forest safaris, birdwatching and scenic Vindhyan landscapes are major attractions.

Summers are hot, the southwest monsoon brings moderate rainfall and winters are cool and pleasant.

Nearest airport: Raja Bhoj Airport, Bhopal. Nearest railway stations: Bhopal, Obaidullaganj and Itarsi. The reserve is well connected by road from Bhopal.
Best Time to Visit
November to June is the preferred period for wildlife viewing.
