Orang Tiger Reserve
Introduction
Orang Tiger Reserve in Assam is one of India’s smallest yet most biologically rich tiger reserves. Located on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River, it is often called the ‘Mini Kaziranga’ because of its similar floodplain grassland ecosystem and thriving populations of tigers, one-horned rhinoceroses and other megafauna. It became a Tiger Reserve in 2016.

Location
The reserve lies on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River in Assam and forms an important protected floodplain ecosystem.
History
Originally declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1985 and later a National Park, Orang was notified as a Tiger Reserve in 2016 to strengthen conservation of tigers and associated wildlife.
Landscape, Geography & Habitat
The reserve covers 492.46 sq km, including a core area of 79.28 sq km and a buffer area of 413.18 sq km. Vast grasslands, marshes, oxbow lakes and riverine forests create ideal habitats for grazing herbivores and large predators.
Flora
Tall elephant grass, reed beds, khair, sissoo, simul, ficus, riverine vegetation and aquatic plants dominate the landscape.
Fauna
Important mammals include Bengal Tiger, Indian One-horned Rhinoceros, Asian Elephant, Leopard, Wild Boar, Hog Deer, Swamp Deer, Wild Buffalo and Smooth-coated Otter. The reserve also supports rich birdlife including Bengal Florican, storks, pelicans, eagles and migratory waterfowl. Reptiles include Mugger Crocodile, Indian Rock Python and several turtle species.
Rivers & Water Bodies
The Brahmaputra and numerous wetlands sustain wildlife and influence the reserve through annual flooding.
