National Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

The wildlife sanctuary lies in the Morena / Agra / Etawah (Chambal Tri-State River Zone) region of Rajasthan. Well connected via state highways and district road networks in Rajasthan.

History

Notified in September 1979 under the Wildlife Protection Act across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan to save the critically endangered Gharial from total extinction.

Landscape, Geography & Habitat

Covering an exact area of 5,400.00 sq km (400 km protected river stretch across MP, UP & Rajasthan), the sanctuary’s terrain features Ravines of Chambal River, sandy river islands, mudbanks, and clay bluffs.

Flora

Dominant vegetation and floral species include: Kair (Capparis decidua), Babul (Acacia nilotica), Ronj (Acacia leucocephala), Dhak (Butea monosperma), and riverine sedges..

Fauna

The sanctuary harbors a diverse array of mammalian, reptilian, and avian wildlife:

• Primary Mammals: Gangetic River Dolphin (Platanista gangetica – flagship river dolphin!), Smooth-coated Otter, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Small Indian Civet, Indian Crested Porcupine.
• Predators & Carnivores: Smooth-coated Otter, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Small Indian Civet.
• Herbivores & Ungulates: Nilgai (Blue Bull), Wild Boar, Indian Crested Porcupine.
• Reptiles & Amphibians: Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus – world’s largest wild population!), Mugger Crocodile, Crowned River Turtle, Three-striped Roofed Turtle, Indian Flapshell Turtle, Monitor Lizard.

• Resident Woodland Birds: Indian Skimmer (flagship bird!), Sarus Crane, Black-bellied Tern, Great Thick-knee, River Lapwing, Pied Kingfisher.
