History
Notified in April 1987 under Indian wildlife conservation laws to protect the fragile Trans-Himalayan high-altitude ecosystem, migratory bird wetlands, and rare Tibetan ungulates.

The sanctuary harbors a diverse array of mammalian, reptilian, and avian wildlife:
- Primary Mammals: Tibetan Antelope (Chiru – flagship species producing Pashmina wool), Snow Leopard, Tibetan Gazelle (Goa), Tibetan Wild Ass (Kiang), Siberian Ibex, Ladakh Urial, Blue Sheep (Bharal), Himalayan Marmot, Eurasian Lynx.
- Predators & Carnivores: Snow Leopard, Tibetan Wolf, Tibetan Sand Fox, Eurasian Lynx, Himalayan Brown Bear.
- Herbivores & Ungulates: Tibetan Antelope (Chiru), Tibetan Gazelle (Goa), Siberian Ibex, Blue Sheep (Bharal), Ladakh Urial, Tibetan Wild Ass (Kiang), Himalayan Marmot.
