Sathyamangalam Elephant Reserve
Sathyamangalam Elephant Reserve is one of India’s most strategically important elephant landscapes. Situated at the junction of the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats, the reserve protects one of the country’s most significant wildlife corridors, enabling free movement of elephants, tigers and other large mammals between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. It forms an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere landscape and is recognised as a priority conservation area under Project Elephant.
Location
The reserve lies primarily in Erode district of Tamil Nadu and extends into adjoining forest divisions. It shares boundaries with Karnataka to the north and links directly with the Nilgiri landscape to the west.
Brief History
Sathyamangalam Elephant Reserve was notified under Project Elephant by the Government of Tamil Nadu to secure elephant corridors connecting the Nilgiri landscape with the forests of the Eastern Ghats. The reserve later gained additional conservation significance with the notification of Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve.
