Proposed roads through Bhopal’s forest landscape have triggered concerns over their potential impact on tiger movement and breeding habitat, bringing wildlife conservation into the debate over the city’s future development.

According to The Times of India, a formal objection submitted to Madhya Pradesh’s town and country planning department challenges three proposed roads through the Samardha forest division, covering the Chandanpura–Mendora–Mendori landscape. The objection warns that the alignments could fragment habitat and disrupt tiger corridors.

A Forest Landscape Used by Tigers and Cubs

The conservation significance of these areas extends beyond occasional tiger sightings. Earlier reporting has documented tigresses and cubs using the forests around Chandanpura, Mendora and Mendori, alongside movement through the wider Kerwa–Kaliasot landscape.

In November 2023, forest officials described the presence of tigress T-123 and her cubs in this region. They also reported tiger movement between the forests around Bhopal and Ratapani. These historical observations underline the importance of assessing how proposed infrastructure could affect an interconnected wildlife landscape.

Why Habitat Connectivity Matters

For tigers, the value of a forest depends partly on whether animals can move safely between its different patches. Connecting habitats allow young tigers to disperse, establish territories and find mates.

A road can affect this connectivity through more than the clearing required for its construction. Traffic, disturbance and development along its edges can make movement more difficult. Where breeding animals and cubs use the surrounding habitat, the consequences require particular attention.

These are potential risks that need assessment; the objection does not establish that the proposed roads have already caused fragmentation.

Conservation Promises Face a Planning Test

The road controversy comes as Bhopal considers its draft Development Plan 2047. The district administration’s website lists the draft plan, land-use map and related documents, along with provisions for submitting public objections and suggestions.

When announcing the draft in September, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said it sought to balance urban expansion with protection of Bhopal’s natural heritage. Its stated priorities include forests, Bhojtal and improved transport connectivity.

The objection therefore raises a practical question: how will those conservation commitments be reflected in the location of new roads?

Road Alignments Remain Proposals

The routes under dispute are proposed alignments. Their inclusion in a draft planning exercise should not be treated as evidence that construction has begun or that every required approval has been granted.

Examining the alternatives against documented tiger movement, breeding areas and existing habitat connections would help establish whether the city’s transport needs can be met with less ecological disruption. The outcome will matter both for Bhopal’s growing population and for the wildlife sharing its forested outskirts.
