Two people died in separate incidents over the weekend: a suspected elephant attack near Pollachi and a fatal encounter involving a tea estate worker near Kotagiri.

Unidentified Woman Found Near Sarkarpathi

Pollachi forest staff discovered a woman’s body in Kovilkadu near Sarkarpathi on Sunday. Officials suspect an elephant attack occurred early that morning, when residents reported hearing screams.

Police moved the body to Vettaikaranpudur Government Hospital. Her identity remained unconfirmed.

Tea Worker Attacked While Heading for Night Duty

M. Duraisamy, 59, from Pathimattam in Konavakorai, encountered an elephant while travelling to a tea factory around 8.15 pm. He was taken to Kotagiri Government Hospital but died around 9 pm.

Immediate Assistance Provided

Forest officials provided ₹50,000 in immediate assistance to his family. They said elephant movements were being monitored and residents had been cautioned.

Safer Access to Workplaces Deserves Attention

The circumstances raise practical questions about night-time travel through areas used by elephants. For estate communities, warnings need to reach workers before they begin their journeys, alongside arrangements that help them avoid hazardous routes.

The Pollachi investigation must also establish what happened without treating the suspected cause as confirmed. Together, the incidents underline the importance of timely information, coordinated emergency response and support for bereaved families.
