Morena, Madhya Pradesh | October 27, 2026
A 19-month-old male cheetah was rescued from forests in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district after a monitoring team found it injured and struggling to move on October 25.
The radio-collared animal was brought to Kuno National Park that night for veterinary examination and treatment. The cause of its injuries remained under investigation in reports published on October 26.
Young Male Born at Kuno
The injured cheetah was born to Nirva, a South African female, at Kuno. It had been ranging freely outside the national park when the monitoring team discovered its condition.
Project officials confirmed that the animal was receiving treatment while investigators examined the circumstances.
State Tiger Strike Force Investigates
Madhya Pradesh’s State Tiger Strike Force was deployed to investigate, working with forest authorities responsible for the surrounding landscape.
Chief Wildlife Warden Samita Rajora told ThePrint that investigators were considering several possibilities, including an encounter with another animal, injury caused by people, or an accident.
No cause had been established. Suspicions of deliberate harm or poaching should therefore not be treated as confirmed findings.
Earlier Poaching Cases Heighten Concern
The deployment followed concerns about an alleged leopard-poaching network previously investigated in the region. That history prompted caution, but does not establish a connection with the cheetah’s injuries.
Wildlife activists questioned the monitoring arrangements. These allegations remain separate from the investigation’s eventual conclusions.
Protection Must Extend Beyond Park Boundaries
The incident highlights the importance of coordination when cheetahs move through adjoining forest divisions. Radio collars help locate animals, while effective protection also depends on field teams and timely communication between jurisdictions.
The immediate priorities are the young male’s recovery and a clear determination of how it was injured.
