Maharashtra’s State Board for Wildlife has approved proposals for sanctuary protection for Kolamarka and an extension adjoining Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary, alongside 14 conservation reserves across seven districts.

The decisions were taken on October 26 at the board’s 26th meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Kolamarka’s Wild Buffalo Habitat Gets Attention

The board cleared the proposal to upgrade Kolamarka Conservation Reserve in Gadchiroli to a wildlife sanctuary. The area is known for its population of Asiatic wild buffaloes.

Tansa Expansion Approved

A separate proposal covers forest adjoining the existing Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary. The decision concerns an expansion of protection, rather than the creation of an entirely unrelated sanctuary.

Fourteen Reserves Across Seven Districts

The proposed conservation reserves span Pune, Raigad, Nashik, Nandurbar, Thane, Palghar and Chandrapur.

Reported names include Velhe-Mulshi, Bhor Girgad, Dindori, Surgana, Taharabad, Chinchpada, Alibag, Ghera Manikgad, Lonavala, Ghumtara, Jawhar, Asherigad, Dhamani and Ekara.

Approval and Notification Are Different Stages

Although some headlines describe the reserves as notified, PTI’s account identifies these decisions as approvals of proposals. Final notification status should be checked against the government’s published orders.

Implementation Will Determine the Benefits

The decisions offer an opportunity to strengthen habitat management. Their practical value will depend on clear boundaries, adequate staff, sustained funding and engagement with neighbouring communities.
