Sundargarh: A male elephant estimated to be around seven years old was found dead in an agricultural field at Dumerta village in Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Wednesday, October 21.

The tusker was reportedly entangled in wire described as solar fencing, raising suspicions of electrocution. The exact time of discovery was not specified.

Forest Team Begins Investigation

Dumerta falls under Bandhamunda panchayat in Bisra block. Following information from residents, personnel from the Rourkela Forest Division reached the location, secured the area and began examining the circumstances.

Officials are investigating the fencing installation and whether an electrical fault or an unauthorised power connection contributed to the death.

Cause Awaits Postmortem Findings

Electrocution remains a preliminary suspicion. Authorities said the cause would be established through the postmortem examination and field investigation.

The report did not confirm the electricity source, identify anyone responsible or announce any arrests.

Focus on Agricultural Fencing Risks

The incident highlights the need to examine fencing safety where agricultural land overlaps with elephant movement. Findings from the investigation will be important in determining what happened and whether preventive action is required.
