Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh: A boy was killed in a suspected leopard attack in Tapar Purwa village under Singahi police station on October 14, the second reported fatal attack on a child in the district within three days.
The Times of India identified the victim as eight-year-old Manjit Singh, son of Joga Singh. However, other reports differ on his name and age.
Child Carried Away Near Home
According to the newspaper, the attack occurred around 6.30 pm. His father rushed outside after hearing screams, but the animal carried the child towards nearby wooded land.
Searchers recovered his body around 8.30 pm. Forest officials said pugmarks could not be found to conclusively identify the animal as a leopard.
Protest Follows the Death
Residents initially prevented police from taking the body for post-mortem. Officials held discussions with villagers, who demanded compensation, lighting and protective measures along the forest–farmland boundary.
Cages and Camera Traps Installed
North Nighasan Range Officer Bhupendra Singh said two cages and four camera traps had been installed near the site. Forest teams were monitoring the area.
Earlier Attack Killed Seven-Year-Old Girl
The death followed the killing of seven-year-old Saniya in Bojhiya village on October 12. She was carried away from outside her home, and her body was found the next morning.
The incidents have intensified concern among communities in the Dudhwa buffer landscape.
