Debrigarh Deploys AI-Enabled Camera Traps to Strengthen Wildlife Monitoring

Wildlifeindia News Desk

Odisha: Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary has installed AI-enabled, on-demand camera traps to improve wildlife surveillance and conservation management. The Times of India describes the deployment as a first for the state.

System Identifies Wildlife Species

The cameras use a Convolutional Neural Network-based artificial intelligence engine to recognise animals in captured images.

The system reportedly identifies eight species. Those named in the report include gaur, leopard, sambar, spotted deer, wild pig, sloth bear and nilgai.

Images Processed on the Device

Processing takes place directly within the camera system, allowing relevant wildlife records to be filtered before further analysis.

This is intended to reduce the time staff spend manually examining thousands of photographs and help them analyse animal activity more quickly.

Control Room Supports Surveillance

The sanctuary has also established a central control room to monitor live feeds from surveillance equipment. Officials expect this to strengthen protection and improve tracking of wildlife movement.

Focus Extends to Conservation Management

Unlike systems primarily designed to detect human intrusion and poaching, these cameras focus on identifying wildlife. The deployment adds another tool for monitoring the sanctuary’s animals and informing management decisions.
