Wildlifeindia News Desk

Maharashtra: An injured leopard was rescued from Naveen Market in Koynanagar, Patan taluka, on October 11, after a reported three-hour wait for a rescue team.

The animal was found beside a stream near a house behind the post office. Wildlife officials estimated its age at between one-and-a-half and two years and reported an eye injury.

Team Called From Outside the Area

The Forest Department and Sahyadri Tiger Reserve authorities were alerted around 12.30 pm. A rescue team had to travel from outside Koynanagar, while a crowd gathered near the animal.

Leopard Taken for Treatment

The team captured the leopard with local cooperation and transferred it to the Forest Department’s treatment centre at Varade near Karad. The report did not establish how the eye injury occurred.

Residents Seek Local Rescue Capacity

Residents alleged that trained personnel and equipment were unavailable locally. Mahesh Shelar called for an explanation of the delay and an authorised, equipped rescue team involving trained local youth.

Calls for Monitoring and Alerts

Residents also sought stronger patrolling, wildlife monitoring and timely public warnings following leopard sightings near settlements.
