Gujarat, October 7: Two lionesses and a two-month-old lion cub were rescued after falling into wells in three separate incidents in Gujarat’s Amreli and Gir Somnath districts. Forest personnel brought all three animals to safety and arranged medical care.
The rescues had encouraging outcomes, including the cub’s reunion with its mother. However, the incidents underline how everyday agricultural structures can become dangerous obstacles for wildlife moving through rural landscapes.
Lioness Rescued During Night-Time Operation
In Babarkot, a lioness fell into an empty well. Forest personnel carried out a late-night rescue and subsequently sent her for a health examination.
An empty well can trap an animal even without the immediate danger of drowning. A fall may cause injuries, while steep sides can prevent escape.
Another Lioness Falls While Chasing Prey
In Virpur village, a second lioness fell into a water-filled farm well while pursuing prey. She was rescued and taken for medical care.
The incident illustrates how a hunting animal can encounter a sudden hazard while moving through farmland. Water-filled wells add the risk of exhaustion and drowning if an animal cannot find a foothold or climb out.
Young Cub Reunited with Its Mother
The third incident occurred in Bodidar, where a two-month-old cub fell into a well. Following rescue, the cub received care at Jasadhar Animal Care Centre and was reunited with its mother that night.
For such a young animal, rescue involves more than removal from the well. Medical assessment and a safe reunion are important parts of the response.
Making the Landscape Safer
These incidents point to the need for prevention alongside emergency rescue. Identifying hazardous wells, installing suitable protective barriers and ensuring that residents can quickly alert forest officials would help reduce the risk of similar accidents.
The successful rescues are welcome news. Their wider lesson is that wildlife protection must also address hazards in the working landscapes through which animals move.
