A young male leopard, estimated to be two to three years old, was found dead in a reserved forest near Ramteertha village in Hangal taluk of Karnataka’s Haveri district on Saturday.
The carcass was discovered in Survey No. 109, within the Dasarathkoppa patrol limits of the Aregoppa section of the Hangal forest range. Forest officials rushed to the site and initiated the prescribed procedures.
Injuries found on the leopard
A post-mortem examination was conducted in the presence of veterinary officers, forest personnel and local representatives.
During the examination, officials found injuries on the leopard’s body. Preliminary observations suggest that the injuries may have been sustained during a territorial fight with another leopard.
Forest officials believe the animal may have died from these injuries. However, the exact cause of death has not yet been conclusively established.
Samples sent for forensic examination
To determine the precise cause of death, officials collected tissue and other samples and sent them to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for detailed analysis.
The final cause of death will be confirmed only after the laboratory report is received.
No evidence of poaching found
The Forest Department said that its preliminary investigation found no evidence of human involvement or poaching at the site.
Following completion of the post-mortem, the leopard’s carcass was cremated and disposed of according to established protocol under official supervision.
The FSL report is now awaited and will provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the young leopard’s death.
