A six-year-old male leopard has been safely captured by the Forest Department in Guleria Jagatapur village, under the Motipur range of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Division, following repeated livestock attacks and frequent sightings of the animal close to human habitation.
Trap cage brings leopard under control
Forest officials had identified the area as vulnerable because of regular leopard activity and reports of livestock being attacked. A trap cage was installed at a strategic location to capture the animal and reduce the risk of further incidents.
The leopard eventually entered the cage and was safely secured by forest personnel. It was then transported to a designated safe house for further assessment.
Found healthy after capture
Veterinarians conducted a preliminary health examination after the leopard was rescued. The animal was found to be active and in good physical condition, indicating that it had not suffered any apparent injury during the capture operation.
Authorities will now decide whether the leopard should be released or relocated, following the applicable guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
Seventh leopard rescue in 35 days
The latest capture is significant because it is reportedly the seventh leopard rescue in the Katarniaghat division in just 35 days.
The repeated rescues highlight the continuing movement of leopards through villages and other human-dominated areas bordering the forest landscape. Such movement can increase the possibility of livestock losses and encounters between people and wildlife.
The Forest Department’s decision to use trap cages in vulnerable locations is aimed at reducing the immediate risk to local communities while ensuring that the animals are handled safely.
For now, the captured leopard remains under observation, with its eventual release or relocation to be decided by senior wildlife authorities.
