A 14-year-old boy was critically injured after being attacked by a wild bear in a forested area of Ramban district on Saturday, triggering concern among residents living close to wildlife habitat.

The victim, Akram Ahmad Chopan, a resident of Seeri village, had gone to the Asher area of Banihal to tend to his livestock when he encountered the bear.

Shepherds rush to his rescue

The bear attacked the teenager while he was in the forested area. His cries alerted nearby shepherds, who immediately rushed towards the spot.

The shepherds managed to drive the bear away, allowing them to reach the injured boy and move him to a hospital for treatment. He was taken to the Sub-District Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

The incident has renewed concerns over the risks faced by people who depend on forest and grazing areas for their livestock, particularly in parts of the Chenab Valley where human settlements and wildlife habitats overlap.

Human-wildlife conflict concern

The latest attack highlights the continuing challenge of human-bear encounters in Jammu & Kashmir. People entering forested areas to graze livestock can unexpectedly come into contact with wild animals, especially where natural habitat extends close to villages.

The quick response by the shepherds was crucial in helping the injured teenager after the attack. Authorities and local communities will now need to remain vigilant around areas where bear movement has been reported.

The incident is another reminder of the importance of early warnings, community awareness and rapid response mechanisms in reducing the risk of further human-wildlife conflict while ensuring that wild animals are also protected.
