A 50-year-old woman was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants at Barki Pauna village in Ramgarh district, in another fatal incident of human-elephant conflict in Jharkhand.
The deceased, Bhanu Devi, was working in the fields when a herd of around eight to 10 elephants suddenly entered the village, triggering panic among residents. A man and another woman were also injured in the incident.
According to villagers, the elephants reached the area near the Barki Pauna temple, reportedly for the first time. Forest Department officials and personnel from the Rajrappa police station reached the site after receiving information about the attack.
Herd has been roaming the area
The incident comes amid growing concern over elephant movements in the region. A larger herd of around 40 elephants has reportedly been roaming the areas around Rajrappa, Gola and Makanpur for several days.
The herd subsequently moved towards inhabited areas, increasing concerns over the safety of villagers living close to its movement routes.
The Forest Department is monitoring the elephants and has urged residents to maintain a safe distance. Villagers have specifically been advised not to approach the herd or attempt to record videos, and to follow official instructions while avoiding rumours that could trigger panic.
The latest death once again highlights the difficult challenge of managing human-elephant conflict in Jharkhand, where elephants frequently move through landscapes shared with agricultural communities.
