After nearly a month of intensive tracking, the Chhattisgarh Forest Department has successfully and safely captured a leopard that had been roaming near villages in Gariaband district, bringing relief to local residents who had been living in fear of repeated sightings.
Forest officials had been monitoring the leopard’s movements using camera traps, field patrols and inputs from villagers after the animal was frequently spotted close to human settlements. To ensure the safety of both people and the leopard, the department deployed specialised rescue teams and strategically placed a cage trap in the area.
The operation concluded successfully when the leopard entered the trap without injury. Veterinarians examined the animal immediately after its capture and confirmed that it was in stable condition. Forest officials will now assess its health and determine the most suitable location for its release back into the wild.
Authorities praised the cooperation of local villagers, whose timely information helped track the leopard’s movements while avoiding panic. Residents have been urged to continue reporting wildlife sightings promptly and refrain from approaching wild animals.
The successful rescue highlights the importance of scientific wildlife management, community participation and rapid response by forest officials in addressing human-leopard conflict while ensuring the welfare of both wildlife and local communities.
