A tragic leopard attack claimed the life of a five-year-old girl in Maharashtra’s Pune district after the animal reportedly lifted her while she was asleep beside her family outside their home in Shirur taluka.

According to reports, the incident occurred during the early hours when the family was sleeping in the open, a common practice in rural areas during the summer. The leopard silently entered the settlement, picked up the child, and disappeared into nearby fields before anyone could react.

When the family realized the girl was missing, villagers and forest officials launched an immediate search. Her body was later found at some distance from the house, confirming that she had been killed in the leopard attack.

The incident has triggered fear and anger among residents of the area, many of whom say leopard sightings have become increasingly frequent in recent months. Villagers have urged the Forest Department to intensify patrolling, install camera traps, and take immediate steps to prevent further attacks.

Forest officials have begun monitoring the area to identify the leopard responsible. Trapping cages and surveillance measures are expected to be deployed, while people have been advised to avoid sleeping outdoors, especially in villages located close to sugarcane fields and forest patches that often provide cover for leopards.

Leopard attacks on humans remain relatively rare, but children are particularly vulnerable in landscapes where agriculture, human settlements, and leopard habitats overlap. Sugarcane fields in western Maharashtra often serve as temporary shelter for leopards, increasing the chances of encounters with people.

The latest tragedy underscores the growing challenge of human-leopard coexistence in Maharashtra and highlights the urgent need for stronger conflict mitigation measures, greater public awareness, and rapid response mechanisms to protect both local communities and wildlife.
