Ahmedabad, July 21: A rescue operation was launched in Ahmedabad after a leopard was spotted inside a residential housing society, prompting panic among residents and a swift response from the Forest Department.

The big cat was reportedly seen moving within the premises of the society during the early hours, leading authorities to cordon off the area. Forest officials, assisted by local police, rushed to the spot and began efforts to safely locate and capture the animal.

Residents were advised to remain indoors and avoid gathering near the operation site to ensure both public safety and the success of the rescue mission. Forest personnel deployed traps and tranquilising equipment while closely monitoring the leopard’s movements.

Officials believe the leopard may have strayed into the urban neighbourhood from nearby forested or open areas in search of food or while dispersing to establish new territory. Such incidents have become increasingly common in and around Ahmedabad, where expanding urban development overlaps with leopard habitats.

The Forest Department reiterated that leopards generally avoid humans and attack only when cornered or threatened. Authorities urged the public not to panic, refrain from attempting to approach or photograph the animal, and allow trained wildlife teams to handle the situation.

At the time of reporting, the rescue operation was still in progress, with officials working to safely tranquilise and relocate the leopard to a suitable forest habitat. No injuries had been reported.

The incident once again highlights the growing challenge of human-leopard interactions in Gujarat, underscoring the need for better habitat connectivity, public awareness, and rapid-response wildlife rescue mechanisms to minimise conflict while ensuring the safety of both people and wildlife.
