A 30-year-old man was killed in a suspected wild animal attack in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district, highlighting the continuing challenge of human-wildlife conflict in the region.

The victim, identified as Anil Divate, a resident of Ballarpur, had entered the Padmapur forest under the Bhuj Forest Range of the South Chandrapur Forest Division on July 9 to collect wild vegetables. During the visit, he was allegedly attacked by a wild animal and sustained fatal injuries, dying at the scene.

Forest Department officials reached the site after being alerted and launched an investigation. Based on the nature of the injuries, officials suspect that a wild animal was responsible for the attack. Evidence collected from the location is being examined to determine the species involved.

The incident has caused concern among residents of nearby villages. The Forest Department has advised people to exercise caution while entering forest areas, particularly for collecting forest produce. Authorities have also initiated the process of providing compensation to the victim’s family in accordance with government norms.

According to officials, this is the 25th human fatality linked to human-wildlife conflict in Chandrapur district in 2026, underscoring the persistent risks faced by communities living close to forested landscapes.
