Another lion attack in Gujarat 🦁🚨

A 21-year-old man died in a lion attack in Gujarat’s Amreli district on July 8 after allegedly joining a group engaged in illegal lion watching near the boundary of the Antalya Revenue area and the Luwaria Reserve Forest in Liliya taluka.

The victim, Sohil Memon, was attacked, prompting the Forest Department to launch an investigation. The incident occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm, after which senior officials, including Shetrunji Division DCF Chirag Amin, reached the Liliya Range Office and began rescue, inquiry and legal proceedings.

According to Amin, preliminary findings suggest a lion and lioness were in their mating period when the group entered the forest. Officials believe the animals were disturbed, causing the male lion to attack Sohil. Forest staff said the lion dragged the body deeper into the forest and stayed nearby in an aggressive state before it was recovered and sent for postmortem.

Two youths allegedly with the victim have been detained for questioning, while officials are identifying others present. Investigators are also examining digital evidence, as local sources say deleted photos and videos from the youths’ phones may be recovered through the Forensic Science Laboratory.

Amin clarified that seeing a lion in a village or field is not illegal, but entering its habitat to track, disturb or provoke it violates the Wildlife Protection Act. The case has renewed concern over rising human-lion conflict in the Gir landscape, where at least four attacks on humans have been reported in the past 20 days.
