Location

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is geographically located in the Mandya district of Karnataka. On Bengaluru-Mysore Expressway near Srirangapatna.

History and Year of Notification

The sanctuary was officially notified in 1940 (Ramsar Site 2022) under Indian wildlife conservation frameworks. Established in 1940 by the Maharaja of Mysore on Dr. Salim Ali’s advice. Designated a Ramsar Site in 2022.

Riverine archipelago of 6 granite islets blanketed with broadleaf trees and bamboo along Kaveri River.
