Location

Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is geographically located in the Ernakulam (Kochi) district of Kerala. Located in central Kochi behind High Court of Kerala.

History and Year of Notification

The sanctuary was officially notified in 2004 under Indian wildlife conservation frameworks. Declared a protected bird sanctuary in August 2004 under the Wildlife Protection Act.

Landscape, Geography and Habitat

Dense mangrove patch dominated by Avicennia officinalis trees surrounding a tidal water pond.

Flora and Bird Species

Known as the ‘Green Lung of Kochi’. Key birds include Black-crowned Night Heron, Little Cormorant, House Crow, White-breasted Waterhen, Marsh Sandpiper, Kingfishers, and Egrets.

Other Wild Animals & Wildlife

Flying Fox (huge fruit bat colony), Eurasian Otter, House Rat, Mangrove Crabs, and 41 species of sub-tidal fishes.
