Location

Harike Wetland Bird Sanctuary is geographically located in the Tarn Taran & Ferozepur district of Punjab. On NH-54 connecting Amritsar and Ferozepur.

History and Year of Notification

The sanctuary was officially notified in 1953 (Ramsar Site 1990) under Indian wildlife conservation frameworks. Created by building Harike Barrage in 1953; declared a Ramsar Site in 1990.

Vast freshwater lake, floating vegetation islands, phragmites reed beds, and river channels.

Flora and Bird Species

Hosts up to 200,000 winter waterfowl. Key species include Cotton Teal, Red-crested Pochard, Bar-headed Goose, Greylag Goose, Eurasian Wigeon, Gadwall, Pintail, Tufted Duck, and Pallas’s Gull.
