A 62-year-old plantation worker was killed in a wild elephant attack at Thalakkulam Estate in Pooppara, Idukki, on Thursday, amid continuing concerns over elephant incursions into plantations and settlements across Kerala’s high-range region.
The victim was identified as Ocha Thevar, a native of Bodinayakanur in Tamil Nadu. He sustained serious injuries after encountering a wild elephant at the 12-acre section of Thalakkulam Estate. He was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.
Elephant herd had been in the area
According to reports, a herd of wild elephants had been present in the estate since the morning.
The presence of the elephants had created concern among plantation workers in the area. However, Thevar eventually came into contact with the herd and was attacked.
The circumstances of the encounter were particularly difficult because the forest-fringe plantation landscape provides elephants with access to areas regularly used by workers.
Forest officials reach the spot
Following the attack, senior Forest Department officials, including the District Forest Officer, proceeded to the site.
The Devikulam Range Officer confirmed that Thevar was taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries but later succumbed. His body was subsequently moved to the mortuary of Idukki Medical College Hospital.
Rapid Response Team faces recurring challenge
The Forest Department’s Rapid Response Team (RRT) regularly attempts to drive elephants back into the forest whenever they enter inhabited areas.
However, officials and local residents face a persistent problem: the elephants frequently return.
This leaves plantation workers and people living along the forest fringe exposed to the possibility of encounters, while repeated elephant movement also causes crop and property damage.
Another elephant incident in Munnar
The fatal attack came just a day after another alarming elephant encounter in nearby Munnar.
A young man reportedly had a narrow escape after coming face-to-face with a wild elephant near Mount Carmel Church in Munnar town. The elephant had entered the area and also damaged crops. CCTV footage of the encounter later emerged.
The two incidents in quick succession have renewed concern over the increasing movement of elephants into areas inhabited or regularly visited by people.
A continuing human-elephant conflict
The Munnar–Pooppara belt is among the high-range landscapes where plantations, settlements and elephant habitats overlap, making complete separation between people and wildlife extremely difficult.
The latest death has once again highlighted the dangers faced by plantation workers, who often have to work in areas where elephant movement is known to occur.
The Kerala government has a standard compensation protocol for victims of wildlife attacks, according to the report. However, preventing repeated encounters remains the larger challenge for authorities.
For now, Forest Department teams are monitoring elephant movement in the affected area and working to prevent further incursions.
