In a major boost to wetland conservation, Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh has been designated as India’s 101st Ramsar Site, becoming the first wetland in the state to receive the prestigious international recognition under the Ramsar Convention. The announcement marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to conserve ecologically important wetlands.

Located within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, Glaw Lake is renowned for its rich biodiversity and pristine freshwater ecosystem. The Ramsar designation highlights its ecological importance in supporting a wide range of aquatic life, migratory birds and other wildlife, while also strengthening efforts to protect the fragile Himalayan landscape.

With the inclusion of Glaw Lake, India’s total number of Ramsar Sites has risen to 101, reinforcing the country’s commitment to wetland conservation, biodiversity protection and climate resilience. The recognition is expected to encourage scientific research, sustainable eco-tourism and greater community participation in safeguarding the lake and its surrounding habitats.

Conservationists have welcomed the development, noting that Ramsar status will help attract greater attention and resources for the long-term protection of Glaw Lake. The designation also underscores the ecological significance of Arunachal Pradesh’s wetlands and their vital role in maintaining water security, supporting wildlife and preserving the natural heritage of the Eastern Himalayas.
