50-Year-Old Woman Seriously Injured in Bear Attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Ganderbal

A 50-year-old woman was seriously injured after being attacked by a wild bear in the Burzapati Behak area of Ganderbal district in central Kashmir, highlighting the growing incidents of human-wildlife conflict in the Himalayan region.

The victim, identified as Rashida Begum from Kalaspati Rayil Gund, was reportedly in the upper meadow area when the bear suddenly attacked, inflicting severe injuries. Local residents, along with personnel from Gund Police, rushed to her aid and shifted her for medical treatment. She was later referred to SKIMS Soura, Srinagar, in a 108 ambulance for specialised care.

Police have confirmed the incident, while forest and local authorities are monitoring the situation. Officials said more details about the extent of her injuries and the circumstances surrounding the attack will emerge after her medical evaluation.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the increasing human-bear conflict in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly during the summer months when villagers move to high-altitude meadows for livestock grazing and other seasonal activities. Authorities have advised residents and herders to remain vigilant, avoid venturing into isolated forest areas alone, and immediately report wildlife sightings to the Forest Department.

Wildlife experts stress that improving public awareness, strengthening early warning systems, and protecting natural bear habitats are essential to reducing conflicts while ensuring the safety of both local communities and wildlife.
