Arunachal Pradesh is strengthening its efforts to conserve hornbills, the iconic “farmers of the forest” that play a vital role in dispersing seeds and maintaining healthy forest ecosystems. Conservationists, forest officials and local communities are working together to protect nesting trees, reduce hunting and promote long-term habitat conservation.
Community-led initiatives, including nest protection programmes and awareness campaigns, have helped change attitudes towards hornbill conservation. The use of artificial hornbill beaks in traditional attire has also reduced pressure on wild populations while respecting local cultural practices.
Experts say protecting hornbills goes beyond saving a single bird species. As key seed dispersers, hornbills help regenerate forests, benefiting countless other plants and animals that depend on these ecosystems. Continued collaboration between indigenous communities, researchers and the Forest Department is expected to play a crucial role in securing the future of these magnificent birds in Arunachal Pradesh.
