A four-horned antelope (Chousingha), one of India’s rarest and most elusive antelope species, has been recorded on the Vetal Tekdi hills in Pune for the first time in over two decades. The sighting was documented by wildlife enthusiasts during a biodiversity survey and has generated excitement among conservationists.

The four-horned antelope is the only wild antelope in the world in which males can develop four horns. It is classified as Vulnerable due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching.

Experts believe the rediscovery indicates that Pune’s hill ecosystems still retain significant biodiversity and may be providing suitable habitat for sensitive wildlife. The finding has renewed calls for stronger protection of the city’s remaining natural hill habitats from urban development and human disturbance.
