A five-month-old female sloth bear cub has been rescued from the buffer zone of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh after being found abandoned and critically injured.

The cub, named Luna, was discovered alone about a week ago in a severely weakened condition, apparently after becoming separated from her mother. Forest officials reported that she was dehydrated, anaemic, underweight, and unable to walk due to a serious injury to her left hind limb.

Following the rescue, the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department shifted Luna to the Wildlife SOS-run Van Vihar Bear Rescue Facility in Bhopal, where she is receiving specialised veterinary treatment and rehabilitation. Veterinarians are providing intensive medical care, nutritional support, and continuous monitoring to aid her recovery.

According to officials, Luna’s condition has stabilised since her admission, although she will require extended rehabilitation before any decision can be made about her future. The rescue highlights the importance of rapid intervention in protecting vulnerable wildlife, particularly young animals that become orphaned or separated from their mothers in the wild.

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including sloth bears, and the successful rescue reflects the coordinated efforts of the Forest Department and wildlife rehabilitation teams to safeguard injured animals and improve their chances of survival.
